EXPERIENCE
With respect to my professional autobiography, my worldview was formed by the commitment to objective, universal truth espoused by Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King. Both were committed to Satyagraha or the Truth War that liberates the spiritual and temporal man. Frank Lloyd Wright aptly encapsulated their Zeitgeist through his family creed: “Truth Against the World.”
The battle for racial equality and women’s rights in our nation
defined the 1960's. The current Truth Wars in the United States form the other bookend. As Dr. King once said, we must honestly confront our shattered dreams. This is what the youth of the 1960's did and this is what our nation must do to redefine what it means to be an American. Having done so, as Dr. King stated further, “Unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. That is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.”
Truth is an integral element of the ethical and moral standards of
my professional experience. We must be the “Early Adopters” of Truth and Courage for our clients. Words mirror the mind of the speaker. As psychological experts, we are craftsman of the spoken word. Counselors use the narrative of the client’s life to build a picture of the environment that has shaped the unhealthy development of mind, body, and character. Scientist practitioners must be proficient at teasing out Truth from the client’s problem- saturated narrative, and elevating that Truth to primacy to thicken the chronicle. This is no less true in economic and community development in distressed communities and higher education administration and advisement. It is a universal law.
"Hunger only for a taste of Justice,
Hunger only for a world of Truth." Tracey Chapman
